Timber mantels are produced by recycling genuine old growth timbers. Recycled wood is very popular with those of us concerned with the environmental issues surrounding logging of remaining stands of old growth forest. Recycled wood comes from old growth woods harvested decades ago. This helps to preserve our current old growth timber stands. Our timber mantel products come from lumber that has been salvaged in and around the Eureka, California area. These timbers may have come from old lumber mills, warehouses, bridges, railroad trestles or docks in the area. Our old growth timber mantels tend to have about twenty growth rings per inch and contain varying degrees of "character marks" which result from previous joinery. These include bolt holes, nail holes, mortises, and notches. The mantels can also contain seasoning checks, which result from being air-dried for many years. |
