Any of these natural (or live-edged) mantels can be cut to a have a straight front edge. Most of the time the pictured side is the bottom to fully show texturing on front edge. The other side has the most surface area and is usually used as the top.

Some of our photographs make our mantels look a bit out of proportion; they are not, it was just the angle the photograph was taken from. All pictured mantels are unfinished unless marked otherwise and each and every one is made-to-order. We will finish them for an extra charge if you want us to -- most people ask us to finish them. Our finishing prices are at the bottom of this page. We size the mantels as large as possible when we cut them and I can make them smaller if you would like. Rustic fireplace mantels, whether you call the grain pattern curly, fiddle-backed or tiger-striped, I don't know what causes this in redwood. If anyone thinks they know, please share it with me. These grain patterns are beautiful and make great countertops, tables and mantels as the grain can be easily seen from a distance. The pictured curly mantels on this page are some of the best I have ever cut in the 40 years I have been doing this. The rustic look usually means the wood has a live edge and tends to have defects in the wood such as small cracks, knots, curly or burly. If you want a perfect, defect-free piece they are available but not common. Please let us know how we can help with your special project. |
